China, an East Asian country is one of the world’s oldest civilizations. It has a vast cultural history of more than five thousand years and an outstanding natural beauty. On the other hand, this country has remained a comparatively isolated and secluded one, and being a land of mystery, this country is not known to the western half of the world. Junshan Island, a lone, mountainous island on Dongting Lake contains 72 peaks. The ferry ride takes about an hour back and forth from Yueyang. The island of is an unusual and alluring sight and quite possibly the northernmost island in the country with a distinct tropical flavor, the island has been famous for centuries for its natural, park-like atmosphere. The original name of the Junshan Island was Dongting Island, which means the cavity for the immortals to live in. Once a Taoist retreat, the island covers an area of 1square kilometer. The lush island was once described by Tang dynasty poet Liu Yuxi as a sumptuous green conch in a silvery plate.
 
Today, the island is a mix of tea bushes, bamboo groves and wooded areas. The bamboo on the island is well known for its many varieties such as mottled bamboo, arhat bamboo, square bamboo, sincere bamboo, and purple bamboo, which is indigenous to the area, it is believed that they were stained by the tears of Emperor Shun's two widows upon his death while visiting the island in 2500 BC, Before Christ. Unique golden tortoises also inhabit the island.The island is most famous however, for its silver needle tea. Supposed to provide longevity, this tea was once paid as tribute to the emperor.
 
Even today, the tea is very expensive and its production is the prime means of livelihood for the islands 200 odd inhabitants. In addition, the island holds a large-scale dragon-boat festival, a lotus festival, and various sporting events on the water every year.
