Jiuquan is a city with several hundred thousand inhabitants in the western part of the Gansu province in China. The city is approximately 1500 m above sea level. Jiuquan was founded in 111 BC, Before Christ as a military outpost on the Silk Route to Central Asia. In the proximity of the city is the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center, built in 1958, where the first Chinese human spaceflight, Shenzhou 5 was launched on 15 October 2003 and the second in 2005.
 
Gansu is a province located in the northwest of the People's Republic of China. It lies between Qinghai, Inner Mongolia, and the Huangtu Plateaus, and borders Mongolia to the north and Xinjiang to the west. The Huang He river passes the southern part of the province. It has a population of approximately 25 million in 1997 and has a large concentration of Hui Chinese. The capital of the province is Lanzhou, located in the southeast part of Gansu.

Jiuquan is definitely one of the popular tourist attractions in China worth paying a visit while touring the country. This place leaves a pleasing and unforgettable memory and justifies the proud cultural tradition of China.
