Yunnan Provincial Museum

China, an East Asian country is one of the world’s oldest civilizations. It has a vast cultural history of more than five thousand years and an outstanding natural beauty. On the other hand, this country has remained a comparatively isolated and secluded one, and being a land of mystery, this country is not known to the western half of the world. However, China is rapidly developing and has grown in the phase of modernization, with an immense speed and is also welcoming the outer world to interact and do business with them.

Yunnan Provincial Museum, in central Kunming, is a striking building that houses a huge collection of exhibits. The 1st floor has a wide array of costumes, textiles, handicrafts and artifacts relating to the 25 different ethnic groups of Yunnan. Other floors have exhibits related to the province's more remote past and include bronzes excavated from 2,000 year old tombs around Dianchi Lake. In all it contains around 50,000 objects in its collections. Many of these objects in this exhibition have essential scientific and artistic value, and offer material evidence of mankind's social growth.

For over 50 years, the Yunnan Provincial Museum has undertook many years of archaeological excavations, collection, surveys, purchases from the society and has received many public donations of bronze ware, ancient books, calligraphy, ceramics and rubbings, postage stamps and several different kinds of folk art and handicrafts.

Within the many thousands of valuable pieces, over 1,000 have been recognised as first-class national treasures. Some of these include bronze ox and tiger altar, gold standing statue of Guanyin, Ming dynasty gold tiara inlaid with precious stones belonging to Lady Mu, a northern Song dynasty landscape painting by Guo Xi and many more. The most exclusive pieces in the museum collection are the bronze ware of the Dian Kingdom, the Buddhist cultural artefacts from the Nanzhao and Dali periods, and the several unusual contemporary pieces of folk art of the ethnic minority groups.

The Yunnan Provincial Museum is definitely one of the popular tourist attractions in China. It is worth paying a visit while touring the country. This place will leave a pleasing and unforgettable memory and justify the proud cultural tradition of China.
