Lying on the west edge of Hangzhou city, West Lake is the sign of Hangzhou plus one of the most stunning sights in China. Early in the Song dynasty, the renowned poet Su Shi compared the lake to Xizi, a Chinese Cleopatra that is ripping water shimmering on sunny day, misty mountains wonder in the rain, plain or gaily decked out like Xizi, the West Lake is all the time appealing. Therefore the Lake is also known as Xizi Lake. With an area of 6 square kilometers and a circumference of 15 kilometers, this lake, surrounded in three sides by rolling wooded hills, has fascinated countless visitors for centuries.

West Lake was formerly a jewel fallen from heaven. In fact it is a lagoon formed as a result of natural changes plus human efforts. Ten thousand years before, the lake was much larger than its current surface of 5.6 square kilometers. Later on, as silt accumulated and weeds overgrew, the lake shrank in amount. The present West Lake consists of five sections, namely the Outer Lake, North Inner Lake, West Inner Lake, Lesser South Lake and Yuehu Lake.

The beauty of the West Lake lies in a lasting charisma that survives the change of seasons in a year, of hours in a day, and of dissimilar weathers. In order to exhibit the best good-looking aspect of West Lake, 10 sights were named by people as the most stunning, which include Melting Snow at Broken Bridge, Sunset Glow over Leifeng Hill, Spring Dawn at Sudi Causeway, Autumn Moon on Calm Lake, Lotus in the Breeze at Crooked Courtyard, Listening to Orioles Singing in the Willows, Viewing Fish at Flowers Harbour, Three Pools Mirroring the Moon, Evening Bell at Nanping Hill and Twin Peaks Piercing the Clouds.
