The Shaolin temple has many legends and mysteries surround it.  The origin of martial arts, the origin of kung fu surrounds the vague mysteries of the Shaolin Temple and the shaolin monks. Shaolin Temple is probably the most famous temple in China, not only because of its long history and its role in Chinese Buddhism, but also because of its martial arts or Wushu Chan. Shaolin Temple is situated in the beautiful Songshan Mountains, which is only eight miles of Dengfeng and about 50 miles southwest of Zhengzhou, the capital of Henan Province. Shaolin Temple was established in 495 during the Northern Wei Dynasty. Emperor Xiaowen was a believer of Buddhism so he decided to build the temple in the Songshan Mountains to house Batuo, who translated many Buddhist works and had a few hundred followers there.
 
Built in 495AD, Shaolin Temple is the famous home of Kung Fu. It is also the home of the Chan sect of Buddhism, which was introduced in 527 by the Indian monk Boddhidharma, founder of the sect. At Shaolin, Boddhidharma supposedly spent 9 years facing a wall in the state of illumination and visitors can still go to the cave where he meditated. In September, the temple comes alive with guests from all over the world, as it hosts the international Wushu Festival. The 30,000 square meter temple comprises 7 rows of buildings including the Hall of Heavenly King, Dharma Pavilion, Thousand Buddha Hall, White-Robe Bodhhisattva Hall and the Hall of Ksitigarbba.
 
The Shaolin Temple is definitely one of the popular tourist attractions in China. It is worth paying a visit while touring the country. This place leaves a pleasing and unforgettable memory and justifies the proud cultural tradition of China. The Shaolin Temple adds to the beauty of China and this fact has consolidated along with abroad tourists visiting the place, making it the most favorite holiday destination for most of the vacation lovers.
