Monument to the People's Heroes

Monument to the People's Heroes is in the center of Tiananmen Square. Its construction began in August 1951 and the memorial was at last erected in April 1958 and it was the first large scale memorial of socialist China. The granite and marble column rises close to 38 meters that is 125 feet and has gilded inscription by Chairman Mao that reads Eternal glory to the people heroes. The foundation structure is adorned with bas-relief carvings depicting major innovatory events and the memorial also has calligraphy by Zhou Enlai.
